“What unites people? Armies? Gold? Flags? Stories. There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it.”
– Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones.
Stories are powerful. Really powerful. I like to use stories to help people understand the impacts of environmental issues, such as flooding. I use immersive storytelling, a technique that uses video games, virtual reality, and 360 videos to place the audience inside the story, closer to the narrative. See the videos below for examples of my previous work.
Producer/Co-Script Writer – Help Callum. A 360 animation telling the true story of a young boy caught up in flooding. A collaboration between SeriousGeoGames (Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull), social scientists at Lancaster University, and the Environment Agency. Developed by Lampada Digital Solutions.
Producer/Writer/Narrator – 360 Flood Tour of Florence. A 360 video where I take the viewer around Florence, Italy, highlighting the history and impacts of the 1966 flooding. Made for the EU SEPA360 project.
Producer/Script Writer – Inundation Street. A 360 animation showing a flooded house and some simple steps that can be taken to reduce the impacts. A collaboration between SeriousGeoGames (Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull) and BetaJester Ltd for the ESPRC DARE project.
Producer/Script Writer/Narrator – Flash Flood! VR. An interactive virtual reality experience that places the user into a river valley during a flash flood. Made by SeriousGeoGames (Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull) for the NERC-FFIR programme. Developed by BetaJester Ltd.
Producer/Script Writer/Narrator – Flash Flood!. A 360 animation, based on the virtual reality activity, showing the impact flash flooding can have on river valleys.
